IPLA 2009 Schedule

The Center for Academic Excellence (CAE) of Oxford College of Emory University and Emory University's Center for Faculty Development and Excellence (CFDE) hosted the 3rd annual Institute for Pedagogy in the Liberal Arts (IPLA) on the Oxford College Campus, May 12-15, 2009.

Created as a pair of two-day sessions, the Institute offered participants the opportunity to work with experts and scholars in a variety of pedagogical contexts.  This year's program sessions was led by

Dr. Patricia Owen-Smith, Carnegie Scholar and Professor of Psychology at Oxford College;

Dr. Pat Marsteller, Professor of Biology and Director of the Center for Science Education at Emory College;

Professor Melissa Wade, Director of Forensics at Emory University; and

Dr. Art Young, the Campbell Professor of English at Clemson University.

The technology sessions were led by the IT professionals with guest presentations from Dr. Ken Carter and Dr. Paul Oser of Oxford College.

Seminars on Tuesday and Wednesday:

  • Debate Across the Curriculum: Assigned Argument and Advocacy for Engaged Learning (Melissa Wade, Emory U)
  • Problem Based Learning Across the Disciplines (Pat Marsteller, Emory C)
  • Blended Learning: Teaching, Learning, and Information Technology (Ken Carter, Paul Oser, and the IT Staff, Oxford C

Seminars on Thursday and Friday:

  • Pedagogies of Engagement (Patti Owen-Smith, Oxford College of Emory)
  • Writing Across the Disciplines (Art Young, Clemson U)
  • Blended Learning: Teaching, Learning, and Information Technology (Ken Carter, Paul Oser, the IT Staff, Oxford C)

  All of these tracks focused upon aspects of the liberal arts intensive curriculum that we share.
