Distinctive and Distinguishing Teachers - Student Voices

There are many qualities of Oxford that daily reconfirm my decision to matriculate at this beautiful campus. However, the best quality of Oxford in my opinion is the professors. The reason is simple: I have never been more challenged in my entire life. Challenging me shows that they want me to grow and learn, and that they take the time to present their wealth of knowledge in such a manner that my mind will want to grapple with it, instead of coasting through a subject. Furthermore, challenging the student is a large commitment on the part of the professor because the professor must then take the time and effort to help the student. I have spent hours in discussion with professors outside of the classroom on their own time - and they encourage it. They know me by name and they want me to be challenged and think independently.

My favorite aspect of being a student at Oxford College is knowing that I am around people who care. Attending such a close-knit campus, which is more of a community, has made me realize that I am at a greater advantage than those who attend universities where they are just a number. The small class sizes are not the only factor that creates an environment where students are unafraid to approach the faculty, but the faculty also show their devotion and care for their students and the campus by participating in oncampus clubs, programs, and activities. Oxford has become a place where I am unafraid to ask questions, to get help from my professors, and a place where I am receiving an outstanding education through faculty who love to teach and who care about what they teach and care for whom they teach.

Of all the things I like about Oxford College, the opportunity for close interaction between teachers and students is unquestionably at the top of my list. I consider myself lucky to go to a school where I can have a personal relationship with every professor I have taken a class with and many that I have not. I attribute this opportunity for close interaction not only to the small size of Oxford's classes but also to the obvious interest the teachers take in their students. I think this is one aspect of Oxford that I will sorely miss when I leave.

Professors at Oxford are a vital part of our learning community. They are truly committed to expanding the learning experience outside the classroom. From overly flexible office hours to one-on-one research cooperation, professors constantly encourage students to do their best in all areas of life. The Oxford faculty is unlike any other I witnessed during my college hunt, and I daresay it was a major factor in my decision to become part of the school. My professors know me personally and academically and they have gone to great lengths to help me grow, discover, and be who I am. Teaching at Oxford is more than a commitment to academia; it is about contributing in all areas to a community of future leaders that will make a difference in the world.

When telling friends and prospective students about Oxford, I am always quick to tell them that my favorite part about this school is the professors. At many schools, the focus is for the students to learn the information. The student is left on his or her own to figure out anything he or she did not understand. I feel that, at Oxford, the focus is to teach the students. I have yet to meet or hear of a professor who, if a student is having trouble in a class and asks for help, would not stay after office hours or write up extra problems to work on to try to help the student excel.
