


Each year The Pierce Institute designates a scholar from the University of Oxford in England as the Pierce Visiting Scholar. The Visiting Scholar comes to Oxford College for at least one week to give public lectures, teach classes, and meet with various groups. Each Visiting Scholar is hosted by a faculty member from Oxford College, who in turn travels to the University of Oxford and is hosted by the Pierce Visiting Scholar.
The 2009-2010 Pierce Visiting Scholar is Jane Shaw, Evelyn Underhill Professor of Historical Theology, dean of divinity, chaplain, and fellow of New College, Oxford University. Dr. Shaw has been a fellow of New College since 2001. An ordained Anglican priest, she also serves as dean of divinity and chaplain of the college. In the university, she is a reader in church history, lectures on ninetheenth-century Christian thought and practice, and directs a research project on modern prophecy movements. Her pubilcations include Miracles in Enlightenment England (Yale, 2006). She is also an honorary canon of Christ Church Cathedral in Oxford and canon theologian of Salisbury Cathedral. Her research and teaching interest include modern British history; gender history; history of Christianity in the modern world; history of sexuality and religion; and collective biography and life-writing.
