Graduation Requirements Detailed Summary 

Effective Fall 2019 

Subject to the limitations and qualifications stated elsewhere in this catalog, requirements for associate of arts degrees are as follows: minimum residency; a minimum of 66 semester hours of credit: 64 hours in academic courses plus two physical education hours; a grade point average of at least 2.0 for all work attempted for a letter grade; fulfillment of the General Education Program; and satisfaction of all financial obligations to Oxford College and Emory University.   

No degree may be conferred to a student while that student is suspended from Oxford College under the provisions of the Honor Code or Code of Conduct. 

Students may not continue to the Atlanta campus of Emory University until all degree requirements have been met and the associate of arts degree conferred.

General Education Program: Oxford Requirements

Discovery Seminar:  One Discovery Seminar course is required for all students during their first fall semester at Oxford College. Discovery Seminar courses are designated as DSC 101Q. This course will carry an academic area designation (MQR, SNT, HSC, HAP or HAL) as well as a Ways of Inquiry (Q) designation. The instructor of record for the Discovery Seminar will be assigned as the student’s academic adviser. 

  • Requirement: One course. Must be completed at Oxford College in first fall semester. 

Experiential Learning: One Experiential Learning course is required for all students during their Oxford career. Experiential Learning courses are designated with an “E.”  

  • Requirement: One course. Must be completed at Oxford College. 

Ways of Inquiry: Two Ways of Inquiry courses (minimum 3 credit hours each) are required for all students during their Oxford career. Ways of Inquiry Courses are designated with a “Q” and will carry an academic area designation (MQR, SNT, HSC, HAP or HAL). The DSC101Q course may serve as one of the two required Q courses.  

  • Requirement: Two courses across two different academic area designations (MQR, SNT, HSC, HAP, or HAL). Must be completed at Oxford College.  

General Education Program: Writing Requirements

First-Year Writing Requirement: One English 185 or 186 course is required for all students during the first two semesters at Oxford College. Entering international students may choose to enroll in English 186 for additional language support. Students may satisfy the First-Year Writing Requirement with Advanced Placement (AP), International Baccalaureate (IB), or transfer credit. 

  • Requirement: One course. Must be completed at Oxford College in first two semesters.  

Continuing Writing Requirement: In addition to the First-Year Writing Requirement, one writing rich course is required for all students during their Oxford career. Continuing Writing Courses are designated with a “W” and may also satisfy another academic area requirement (MQRW, SNTW, HSCW, HAPW, HALW).    

NOTE: Students will be expected to take 2 additional W courses when they continue on to the Atlanta Campus.  

  • Requirement: One course. Must earn a grade of “C” or better. 

General Education Program: Breadth Requirements: CORE

  • Requirement: Students must complete ALL of the following during their Oxford career: 

Science, Nature, Technology with lab (SNTL): All students must complete a minimum of one SNTL course. Must be completed at Oxford College. 

History Society and Culture (HSC): All students must complete a minimum of one HSC course at Oxford. Oxford GEP requirement: One HSC course. Must be completed at Oxford College.  

Humanities Arts and Performance (HAP): All students must complete at least one HAP course at Oxford. Oxford GEP requirement: One HAP course. Must be completed at Oxford College.

General Education Program Breadth Requirements: Elective 

  • Requirement: Three of the five areas listed below:  

NOTE: Some requirements can be completed at Emory’s Atlanta campus; students are encouraged to speak with their academic advisors for more information. 

Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning (MQR): To fulfill this area, students must complete at least one course labeled MQR. 

Science, Nature, Technology (SNT/SNTL): To fulfill this area, students must complete at least two courses labeled SNT.  

History, Society, Cultures (HSC): To fulfill this area, students must complete at least two courses labeled HSC.  

Humanities, Arts, Performance (HAP): To fulfill this area, students must complete at least two courses labeled HAP.  

Humanities, Arts, Language (HAL): To fulfill this area, students must complete at least two sequential foreign language courses in the same language. Students may substitute a third HAL course for one of the two required HAP courses.

General Education Program: Physical Education

Physical Education (PE): To fulfill this area, students must complete two courses labeled PE.  

NOTE: Generally, students take one PE course per year. Students are rarely allowed to take more than 1 PE in the same academic year or during the same semester. 

  • Requirement: two courses. One must be completed at Oxford College in the first two semesters.

Graduation Requirements Detailed Summary

Prior to Fall 2019 

Oxford students who complete the degree requirements, plus elective courses for a total of sixty-six (66) semester hours (sixty-four (64) academic hours plus two (2) PE hours), and do so with a 2.0 or higher cumulative GPA are eligible to enter Emory College as juniors. Students who complete their degrees from Oxford are awarded an associate of arts (AA) degree and are eligible to participate in a special commencement ceremony before continuing on to the Atlanta campus. Students must complete their Oxford AA degree in order to progress to Emory College as juniors. 

General Education Program Requirements 

First-Year Writing Requirement 

Students must satisfactorily complete English 185 during the first year of their enrollment at Oxford College. The requirement can be met with English 185: Critical Reading and Writing or with English 186: Critical Reading and Writing for Multilingual Students. Students may be eligible to exempt the First-Year Writing Requirement with appropriate Advanced Placement (AP) credit, International Baccalaureate (IB) credit, or transfer credit. 

Continuing Writing Requirement 

In addition to the First-Year Writing requirement, students must satisfactorily complete a writing-rich course at Oxford College. Students must attain a grade of a C or better in the writing-rich course to satisfy the Continuing Writing Requirement. Continued writing courses are designated with a W after the course catalog number in the class schedule and in OPUS.  

Distribution Requirements 

Students must complete three of the five different academic areas listed below plus physical education requirements. All students are required to take at least one course in each of the following areas: SNT (w/lab), HSC, and HAP. In addition, Oxford students must complete a minimum of three (3) Ways of Inquiry (INQ) courses, representing any two of the five different academic areas. INQ courses are designated with a Q after the course catalog number in the class schedule and in OPUS.  

Mathematics and Quantitative Reasoning  (MQR) 

To fulfill this area, students must complete at least one course that carries the TAG designation MQR. 

Science, Nature, Technology (SNT) 

To fulfill this area, students must complete at least two courses that carry the TAG designation SNT. All students must take at least one SNT course with lab to satisfy the GEP requirements. 

History, Society, Cultures (HSC) 

To fulfill this area, student must complete at least two courses that carry the TAG designation HSC. All students must take at least one HSC course to satisfy the GEP requirements. 

Humanities, Arts, Performance (HAP) 

To fulfill this area, students must complete at least two courses that carry the TAG designation HAP. All students must take at least one HAP course to satisfy the GEP requirements. 

Humanities, Arts, Language (HAL) 

To fulfill this area, students must complete at least two foreign language courses in the same language. In addition, students may take additional language courses to fulfill the HAP requirement after completing the HAL requirement. 

Physical Education (PED/PPF) 

To fulfill this area, students must complete two semester hours in physical education with classes that carry the TAG designation PED/PPF. Students are required to take one physical education class in their first year and one in their sophomore year.
