Mike Vardas 80Ox 82B is Head of Northern Trust Capital Markets, which includes global securities lending and Northern Trust Securities. In his 35th year of his professional career, 34 of those years have been spent with The Northern Trust in Chicago. Northern Trust is a custody bank and is the 20th largest bank holding company in the US, with a balance sheet size of $120 billion, assets under custody of $6.7 trillion, and assets under management of $946 billion. Northern is a global company with half of its 16,000 employees outside of North America.
Vardas will reflect on his career to date, the challenges that he has faced, and how he learned from, and capitalized on those challenging opportunities.
Most, if not all, of the stories that he will relate have to do with the global financial markets, and include: the Penn Square bank; the 1987 stock market crash; the S&L crisis; emerging markets crash; Russian debt crisis; the dot com bubble; September 11, 2001; and the global financial crisis, or GFC. Vardas will discuss what it takes, as an individual and an institution, to thrive and grow in the face of constant change and relentless competition.
Vardas will also discuss how this community of professors, friends and neighbors at Oxford College prepared him for life and professional success.
He'll share why he is proud to tell people that he attended Oxford College of Emory University. Vardas will also talk about what he might do differently, or the same, given the opportunity.
Before becoming Executive Vice President/President, Vardas was responsible for Northern Trust's quantitative management index strategies, active strategies, and tax advantaged investment mandates.
Vardas joined Northern Trust in 1983 and spent 11 years in the Treasury department, responsible for asset and liability management for the corporation and its subsidiaries. Prior to joining Northern Trust, Mike was associated with the Chicago Board Options Exchange.
Vardas received his Master of Management degree in 1986 from Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate Business School, a Bachelor of Business Administration degree from Emory University in 1982, and an Associate of Arts degree from Oxford College of Emory University in 1980.
Vardas is a holder of the right to use the Chartered Financial Analyst designation, a member of the Investment Analysts Society of Chicago, and the Association for Investment Management and Research. He holds Series 7, 63 and 24 licenses.
As a volunteer, Vardas serves as vice chairman of the board of directors for Metropolitan Family Services of Chicago (MFS). MFS empowers 70,000 families in the Chicago area to achieve economic, educational, and emotional wellbeing. He lives in Burr Ridge, Illinois with his wife Lori, who is also an Emory College alum 82C. They have three children.
This is an Oxford Studies event.
