Ethics and Servant Leadership

Ethics and Servant Leadership Description

The Ethics and Servant Leadership Program (EASL) seeks to promote the principles of servant leadership throughout t he Emory community. Servant leadership is a leadership model for the new millennium that "emphasizes increased service to others, a holistic approach to work, and a sharing of power in decision making." University students, with their passion for service and a creative impulse to change the world, are our best hope for transformative leadership in the twenty-first century. University faculty awaken the intellectual rigor and moral virtues that establish attentiveness to the common good. University staff help create a holistic work environment that sets the moral tenor of the University. Through teaching and program development, EASL strives to animate, advance, and support these Emory leaders as they develop the power to serve and lead for the common good. EASL Goals

  1. Student Formation: assisting students in holistic vocational development; helping them connect their intellectual, spiritual, and leadership capacities for service to the world around them.
  2. Community Partnerships: collaborating with civic, professional, and business organizations to provide students with internship and other growth opportunities; offering university resources toward the building of healthier communities in metropolitan Atlanta.
  3. Curricular and Faculty Development: providing courses in practical ethics and leadership studies for Emory College students; supplying resources to assist university faculty in integrating teaching, research, and community service.
  4. Research and Publication: participating in the burgeoning national commitment to "university citizenship" through research and publication on ethics and servant leadership; representing Emory as a key voice in national conferences on leadership, service, and education.
  5. Staff Support: partnering with staff in nurturing the university's commitment to promoting community and fostering a holistic approach to work; moving Emory towards a vision of a "great place to work.

The Servant Leadership internship program includes eight weeks on-site, an orientation and post-internship retreat, weekly internship group meetings, and readings and portfolio projects. The program is designed to enrich and integrate the practical, spiritual and intellectual components of the summer internship experience. Servant Leadership emphasizes "increased service to others; a holistic approach to work; promoting a sense of community; and the sharing of power in decision making."

Each intern works closely with a mentor/supervisor on focused projects that incorporate servant leadership development and ethical reflection. Each internship coordinator completes a placement information sheet that is on file at the Center for Ethics.

A learning contract for interns, placement partners and the Servant Leadership program will be in place before the internship commences.
