Leaderhip Oxford

More than 180 first-year students applied for the 50 spots in the annual training program for student leaders called Leadership Oxford. The popularity of the program has prompted organizers to expand the program to include more first year students at the beginning of their sophomore semester. See link to EXCEL

Leadership Oxford was started in 1988 to prepare student leaders for their duties in campus organizations. Most of the students who enroll are anticipating student-leadership positions. During the week long series of activities, students bond closely as they learn a teamwork approach to campus leadership.

Described as "eight intense days," Leadership Oxford requires that students attend training sessions, workshops and challenge courses before they spend a weekend at Camp Mikell in Toccoa, Georgia. The weekend at camp is the binding force where students develop important relationships, learn about one another and discover ways they are uniquely suited to leadership. The week ends with a celebratory banquet.

Participants take a personality profile and spend an evening discussing student-body diversity and how leaders can be effective in diverse groups. Another evening is spent in conversation about ethical dilemmas that they might face as future leaders.

The students also go on a "history walk" through campus featuring the values of students, faculty and staff who have shaped Oxford. Stressed is the new student's place in this history story and their responsibility to carry on the great traditions of the past.
