Postcards to Oxford: Hello from BerlinAugust 03, 2010
David B. Gowler, Pierce Professor of Religion at Oxford, participated in the 65th annual meeting of the Studiorum Novi Testamenti Societas (SNTS) in Berlin, Germany, July 25-August 1. The SNTS is a small group of senior New Testament scholars--a total of around 900 scholars from around the world. Gowler, who was elected as a member of the SNTS in 2000, participated in a seminar on slavery in the ancient world as part of his work in teaching Religion 345, The Ethics of Jesus, a new course offered this fall at Oxford. Dr. Gowler also did research at the famous art museum, the Gemäldegalerie in Berlin, in conjunction with an article he is writing for an academic journal on Luke 12 and Rembrandt's The Rich Fool. He also investigated many additional paintings for his Religion 347 course, Portraits of Jesus, a course that investigates biblical interpretations in works of visual art.
