Oxford falls in home opener to Southern Wesleyan JV 84 to 77

November 05, 2010

The Oxford College Basketball Team began the 2010-2011 season, Monday night with a hard fought loss to Southern Wesleyan Junior Varsity by a score of 84 to 77, in front of a packed house at Williams Gym.

Both teams seemed to have early season nerves as the Eagles lead 15 to 12 at the 14:29 mark of the first half.  Southern Wesleyan then went on a 16 to 3 run to take their biggest lead of the game  18 to 28 with just over 8 minutes left in the first half.  Southern Wesleyan maintained a 34 to 42 halftime lead.

The Eagles would fight back and take the lead  62-61 on a three-point field goal by Stephen Simmons (Fr. Tampa, FL) at the 9 minutes mark of the second half.  There were 9 lead changes in the game and 4 in the second half as the game went down to the final minutes.

Caesar Anyogu (Soph. Duluth, GA) had an impressive first game despite constantly being double team to score 23 points and pull down 13 rebounds.  Stephen Simmons poured in 17 points and was 3 for 7 from 3 point range, followed by Evan Dunwoodie (Fr. Cumming, GA) with 13 points and Tarik Acevedo (Soph. Lares, Puerto Rico) with 12 points.

The Eagles play again on this Saturday as they host Region 10 conference opponent Central Carolina Community College.  Tipoff is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
