Eagles win First GCAA Division III Conference game in history 80 to 60

December 05, 2011

Coach Stubbs has been trying to establish a Division III GCAA conference for 5 years now.  He has finally gotten his wish and on Friday night, his Oxford College Eagles played and won the first GCAA Region 17 Division III conference basketball game in history versus Southern Crescent Technical College by a score of 80 to 60.

"The team and the coaching staff were really excited to be playing in the first GCAA Region 17 Division III game tonight' commented Coach Stubbs. "Both team played extremely hard before we gained control in the second half".

Southern Crescent played extremely well in the first half as both team shot very poorly. Oxford barely lead 30 to 28 at halftime, in a half with 5 lead changes.

The Eagles came out in the second half and played inspired basketball as they sprinted off a 18 to 6 run to lead 48 to 34 in the first 7 minutes of the 2nd half to gain control of the game.

Kevin Tolbert, a freshman out of Savannah, GA, poured in a career high 22 points and 7 rebounds to lead the Eagles.  Alex Ordu had a splendid second half as he scored all of his 13 points in the second half to go along with 8 rebounds and 6 assist for the game.   Sam Kim did a great job on the boards with 8 offensive rebounds and 7 defensive rebounds.

Reuben Hardy was the leading scorer for Southern Crescent Tech with 16 points.

Both team shot the ball poorly as the Eagles made only 28 out of 80 attempts for 35%.  Southern Crescent did not fair any better making 27 out of 83 attempts for 32.5%.  The major difference in the game was from the charity stripe as the Eagles made 22 of 24 free throws to only 1 of 3 for Southern Crescent.

The Eagles play again at home on Sunday, December 4, versus the Greenville Titans.  Tipoff is scheduled for 3:00pm.

The Eagles now stand at 7-3 for the year.
