It's Commencement Week at Oxford

May 09, 2012

Oxford College will observe its 167th Commencement exercises on Saturday, May 12.  Approximately 350 Oxford sophomores will receive their associate degrees in a ceremony that marks the completion of their first two years of undergraduate study before continuing on to Emory University's Atlanta campus.  Oxford continuees enter Emory College of Arts Sciences, the Nell Hodgson Woodruff School of Nursing or the Goizueta Business School for the remainder of their undergraduate study.

Emory University President James W. Wagner, Provost Earl Lewis and Dean of Emory College Robin Forman will join Oxford College Dean Stephen Bowen in presiding over the ceremony.  Students and other attendees will hear a special address by Zoe Hicks 63OX 65C 76L 83L, immediate past chair of the Oxford College Board of Counselors.

A highlight of the day will be the awarding of the Emory Williams Teaching Award, presented to a faculty member, and the Virgil Y.C. Eady Sophomore Award, presented to a student in recognition of outstanding service to Oxford College.

Honored guests at Commencement will be members of the Oxford College Class of 1962, known as the Gold Robes, who will process behind students and be recognized on the 50th anniversary of their own Oxford graduation.  They and other alumni who have surpassed their 50th anniversary will gather following Commencement for reunion luncheons.
On Friday evening, May 11, an interfaith baccalaureate service will be held in historic Old Church, just north of the Oxford campus.
