Oxford Prepares for H1N1 Flu

August 26, 2009

With the return of students to classes, Oxford has joined other educational institutions across the country in preparing for a possible new wave of H1N1 flu.

While Oxford Student Health is on the list to receive and offer vaccination to students for H1N1 Influenza when it becomes available (possibly as early as late October), Oxford is taking preventive steps now to decrease the likelihood that this new virus will spread in our college community.

Oxford is working closely with Emory Student Health and CDC guidelines to determine the best plan for our college's health.

Oxford Student Health will continue to stay abreast of all H1N1 official communications and recommended guidelines.  The current plan will be updated as necessary when new information becomes available from the CDC.

Highlights of Oxford's plan:

  • Promoting good hygiene (multiple hand-gel stations around campus)
  • Early detection and self-isolation of those with influenza-like illness (ILI)
  • Distribution of self-screening guidelines for college students and employees
  • Encouraging students and employees who are ill with an influenza-like illness (ILI) to go home to self-isolate and recover
  • Students who are ill with an influenza-like illness (ILI) but unable to go home will be encouraged to request a temporary alternative housing assignment, which will be arranged.

Note: Those in self-isolation should leave self-isolation only for medical care and necessities to prevent the spread of illness and seek emergency medical care if they feel they have symptoms that warrant immediate evaluation.

Employees and students may return to campus when they have been fever-free for 24 hours without use of fever-reducing medications.
