FILM 101—INTRODUCTION TO FILM (HA)

Fall, Spring. Credit, four hours. General aesthetic and historical introduction to cinema, with selected readings in film criticism and theory. Weekly in-class screenings required.

FILM 102—INTRODUCTION TO TV AND DIGITAL MEDIA (HA)

On Demand. Credit, three hours. Introduction to the aesthetic principles, narrative strategies, and cultural significance of television and digital media including Internet video, social media, and video games.

FILM 107—INTRODUCTION TO MEDIA PRODUCTION (HA)

Fall, Spring. Credit, four hours. Introduction to the discipline of filmmaking through a series of hands-on individual and collaborative assignments. Cameras, sound equipment, and video editing software, as well as exploring creative and technical problem-solving in film production are covered.

FILM 204—DOCUMENTARY FILM & MEDIA HISTORY (HA)

Every other year. Credit, four hours. The history of non-fiction film and media from the perspective of documentary film and media makers. Weekly in-class screenings required.

FILM 225—FOUNDATION IN MEDIA PSYCHOLOGY (SS)

Fall. Credit, three hours. Prerequisite: FILM_OX 101 or PSYC_OX 110 or PSYC_OX 111. Media Psychology sits at the intersection between the media and the human mind. This course is designed as an interdisciplinary course between the Psychology and the Film and Media Studies departments for Oxford College, Emory University. This course aims to present a foundational exploration of media psychology that can be applied to a diverse range of media choices consumers have today. This course is cross-listed with PSYC_OX 225 and will count as an elective for the Film and Media department.

FILM 278—WRITING THE SHORT FILM (HA)

Spring. Credit, four hours. Prerequisite: FILM_OX 101 or FILM_OX 107. An introduction to the theory and craft of dramatic screenwriting of the short film. Explores how a short script is developed from concept to final written form. Class includes lectures, film viewing, and exercises but is primarily a workshop where new writing receives weekly table reads and feedback.

FILM 299R—DIRECTED RESEARCH

On demand. Credit, one to four hours. A supervised project in an area of study to be determined by the instructor and student. Requires faculty approval. Only four credit hours can be applied toward fulfillment of the major.

FILM 373R—SPECIAL TOPICS IN FILM

On demand. Credit, one to four hours. Prerequisite: Film Studies 101, the introductory course for film studies. Individual topics on film study focusing on a specific period, movement, film genre, or region. Weekly screenings may be required.
