Frequently Asked Questions
General
This year we have a special registration type for family and friends to attend. It does not come with a meal ticket for lunch, but friends and family are welcome to purchase lunch on their own in the cafeteria.
As you approach the campus, there will be ample signage directing you to different parking options across campus. After you park, there will be signs directing you to the student center where you can sign in to the conference. The conference app also has a map to help guide you. Additional signage, as well GURC conference staff, will be available to guide you to the different academic buildings where posters and presentations will be held.
If you have any questions that are not answered here in the FAQs or on the GURC website, you can always reach the GURC organizing committee at GURC@emory.edu.
All of the parking lots will be available for free parking on the days of the conference. There will be signs out to guide you to the various parking options.
In addition to your (and others') presentations, there will be pre-conference workshops for both students and faculty, a welcome reception with a keynote speaker on Friday evening, a welcome address on Saturday morning, and a final keynote in the afternoon before the poster session. You are welcome to all of these events. Please note, there is limited space for the pre-conference student workshop, so please make sure to register for that if you would like to attend when you register for the conference.
We plan to accept close to 200 presentations this year. Our goal is to accept as many proposals as possible.
You may of course bring your own food, but if you pay for a student or non-student registration, you will receive a lunch ticket for a free lunch served in the cafeteria. If you purchase a friend and family registration, you will have to pay for your own lunch in the cafeteria if you would like to dine with your student. Our cafeteria is sensitive to all types of needs, so whether you are a vegan or have a gluten-allergy, there wil be plenty of options for you. Also, snacks and coffee will be available throughout the conference at various stations near the presentation rooms.
Presentation
We have three presentations types: paper presentation (15 minure presentations with 5 minutes for questions), poster presentations, and visual arts displays/performances.
The standard poster size for academic conferences is typically 48 x 36 inches (121.9 x 91.4 cm) in landscape orientation
Poster presenters will receive a specific time by which their posters need to be put up in the morning. Posters can be put up any time prior. Posters can be taken down after the poster session, as it will be the final session of this year's conference.
Paper (oral) presentations should last 15 minutes, allowing 5 minutes for questions. Performances can be of various lengths, but we would prefer you limit your performance to a maximum of 15 minutes.
Oral presentations are typically accompanied by slides, but these are not requried. Various fields have different expectations. In some fields, presenters read their paper, while in others, the presentation is largely unscripted. Please talk to your research mentor about the best way to present for your field.
Presenter attire is typically formal. This could include suits, dresses, dress pants, blazers, a tie. The major thing to keep in mind is that you will be meeting faculty members from all different universities and colleges across Georgia, so dress with that in mind.
