Neufeld's work over nearly two decades at Oxford has supported her belief that libraries should be "the most welcoming place to people from all walks of life."

This summer, Oxford College of Emory University announced the appointment of Ellen Neufeld as director of the College Library. Neufeld was the library’s interim director for the 2023-2024 academic year following the retirement of Kitty McNeill.

“Over Ellen’s 18 years of working at Oxford, she has demonstrated a deep commitment to both the library and our community as a whole,” said Badia Ahad, Dean of Oxford College. “As interim director—and as deputy director the eight years prior—Ellen has invested in the development and empowerment of staff, encouraging them to pursue opportunities for professional growth, take on leadership positions, and implement new ideas.”

Neufeld has outlined an innovative vision for the future of the library that simultaneously builds on existing strengths and locates opportunities for strategic innovations to support Oxford’s mission. Her commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion has been reflected in her involvement in many working groups and initiatives across the university.

“Libraries should always be the most welcoming place for people from all walks of life, providing help and support, research, and a warm environment with access to materials representing diverse approaches to culture and scholarship,” said Neufeld. “I look forward to continuing current collaborations and starting new ones across Oxford and the Emory University Libraries. It is an exciting time for Oxford and the libraries as we embark on new strategic plans for both.”

According to Senior Associate Dean of Academic Affairs Kristin Bonnie, “Ellen’s qualifications, leadership style, and vision made her the right choice for this position, and we are confident her passion for the library will continue to strengthen our vibrant campus community.”
