Oxford announces Tinsley Ellis to deliver Commencement address

This year, the Oxford College community welcomes back one of its most soulful voices.
Oxford College has announced the legendary blues-rock guitarist, songwriter, and alum Tinsley Ellis 77Ox 79C will return to his roots to deliver the 2026 Commencement keynote address as the keynote speaker for its 181st Commencement on Saturday, May 9, 2026.
“Tinsley is a world-class musician who has pursued his life’s work with joy, passion, and commitment. At an alumni gathering last fall, he reminded the audience of how a place is defined not by its structures but by its people. This could not be more true than at Oxford College, and we are thrilled to welcome him home on May 9.”
Long before he released critically acclaimed and award-winning records and shared the stage with some blues and rock legends, Tinsley Ellis was providing the soundtrack to Oxford’s community. It was in Dooley’s Tavern where his peers rocked to his rhythm, creating the backdrop for the late-night conversations and lifelong memories that define the many Oxford alumni experiences.
Reflecting on those formative years from over 20 years ago, he notes that "it was at Oxford that I decided what path I wanted to follow career-wise," crediting the campus as the literal starting point of his professional life. While acknowledging that his trajectory in the arts differs from the more "traditional" paths of medicine or law taken by many of his peers, he views his return to campus with deep humility and a sense of purpose. He believes it’s important for the arts to be represented at the podium, and he expresses his heartfelt desire to honor the graduating class.
“I really want to congratulate them and really want to empower them,” he shared, marking his invitation not just as a personal milestone, but as an opportunity to inspire the next generation to embrace their own unique callings that await them when they leave Oxford for the Atlanta campus.
