Oxford College Announces Plans for Campus Lazy River to Enhance Community and Well-Being
In a bold new step toward enhancing campus life and reimagining the student experience, Oxford College of Emory University today announced plans to introduce a winding lazy river through the heart of campus — a new “third space” designed to foster connection, relaxation, and experiential learning.
Announced by Interim Dean Molly McGehee, the proposed lazy river reflects Oxford’s ongoing commitment to creating spaces where students can recharge, build community, and engage with their environment in new and meaningful ways.
“As we continue to think creatively about how campus spaces can support the whole student experience, we’re excited about the possibilities this concept represents. From floating conversations to hands-on learning, it’s about creating moments that bring our community together.”
According to preliminary concepts, the lazy river would gently flow through campus pathways, offering students a new way to navigate daily life — whether floating between classes, gathering with friends, meeting faculty for office hours, or simply enjoying a moment of calm between commitments.

The initiative builds on Oxford’s focus on creating vibrant third spaces — environments outside the classroom and residence halls where students can connect, collaborate, and unwind. The river would also serve as a “living laboratory,” supporting hands-on learning and research opportunities for students studying environmental science and water systems.

“As we continue to think creatively about how campus spaces can support the whole student experience, we’re excited about the possibilities this concept represents,” McGehee said. “From floating conversations to hands-on learning, it’s about creating moments that bring our community together.”
While still in the conceptual phase, the idea has already generated excitement across campus as students and faculty imagine new ways to engage with campus spaces.
So Oxford, get ready to go with the flow — a new current of fun, connection, and campus spirit may be on the horizon.
Happy April Fool’s Day! While the lazy river may not be flowing just yet, Oxford remains committed to exploring creative ways to enhance student spaces, foster connection, and support well-being across campus.
