A Summer of Discovery Begins at Oxford College

From exploring the science behind biodiversity to writing compelling college essays, tackling real-world challenges, and experiencing life on a college campus, students in Oxford College's inaugural Pre-College Summer Program are about to embark on two unforgettable weeks of learning, connection, and discovery.
This week, Oxford College of Emory University welcomed an outstanding group of high school students from across the country for the launch of its first-ever Pre-College Summer Program. Designed to give students an authentic college experience, the immersive program blends rigorous academics, hands-on workshops, leadership development, and unforgettable experiences both on and off campus.
For the next two weeks, students won't simply sit through lectures—they'll live the Oxford experience.
Each morning, students dive into one of three college-level academic tracks taught by Oxford faculty:
- What Makes a Species? explores biodiversity, evolution, and the science behind defining life.
- Misery by Numbers examines how mathematics helps us understand everything from economics to human behavior.
- Twisted Topology introduces students to one of mathematics' most fascinating and creative fields through puzzles, shapes, and problem-solving.
Beyond the classroom, every afternoon offers opportunities to build skills that extend far beyond academics. Workshops throughout the program cover topics including selective college admissions, writing standout college essays, emotional intelligence, financial literacy, storytelling, communication, leadership, mindfulness, and discovering personal purpose. Students will also connect with Oxford faculty, admissions staff, current students, and college leaders through special sessions and conversations designed to answer questions about college life and help them prepare for what comes next.
Learning continues outside the classroom as well.
Students will explore Oxford's historic campus and downtown Covington, spend a day visiting Emory University's Atlanta campus, participate in community engagement activities, enjoy recreational time, and attend social events ranging from movie night and game night to dinner on the Quad with Oxford leaders. They'll even cheer on the Atlanta Braves during a group outing to Truist Park.
Throughout the program, students will experience the rhythm of residential college life—from shared meals in the dining hall and study sessions in the library to evenings spent building friendships that often last long after the program ends.
While the schedule is packed, the goal extends beyond preparing students for college applications.
"Our hope is that students leave with more confidence, stronger critical thinking skills, new friendships, and a clearer sense of who they are and what they want to pursue," said program organizers. "We want them to experience what it's truly like to learn, live, and grow in a close-knit liberal arts community."
As the inaugural class begins its journey, the next two weeks promise to be filled with curiosity, challenge, discovery, and plenty of memorable moments.
