Photos: Oxford College Convocation and Candlelight Procession

The Oxford College community gathered Wednesday evening for two traditions to mark the new academic year: Oxford Convocation and the Candlelight Procession Ceremony.

Oxford students, faculty and staff came together in Williams Gymnasium for Convocation, which marks the start of the academic year. Oxford College Chaplain Lyn Pace delivered the invocation, followed by remarks from interim Oxford College Dean Kenneth Carter, Emory President Gregory L. Fenves, Provost Ravi V. Bellamkonda and student Michael Cao, vice president of the Oxford SGA.

Following a performance by Emorja Roberson, assistant professor of music and African American studies, physics professor Effrosyni Seitaridou presented Oxford’s Convocation address. Melissa Hage, assistant professor of environmental science, gave a presentation about the Phi Eta Sigma national honor society for first-year students, and, after singing of the alma mater, Pace offered a benediction.

After Convocation, first-year students took part in the Candlelight Procession, carrying candles across the quadrangle to Phi Gamma Hall, where sophomores welcomed them as new members of the Oxford community.
